WHAT HAVE WE DONE?

On Friday, December 14, 2012, in Newtown, CN, a lone gunman entered the Sandy  Hook Elementary School and took the lives of 20 students and six adults before taking his own life.  Such incidents are becoming all too common in our society and it leaves us all struggling with the question, "What can we do?"  I  believe a better question for us to consider is "What have we done?"

For the last three generations, our society has worked diligently through our education system and the media to convince people that there is no God and that the Bible is a book of myth, folklore and outdated principles of morality. While the consequences of a society rejecting God are clearly laid out in Scripture as well as repeated countless times in history, our society seems to be blind to what is happening around us. When a society has been convinced there is no God it has a devastating effect, removing the basic principles that make it possible for people to live together in peace and rendering that society dysfunctional.

For generations our society has allowed our children to be indoctrinated with the theory of evolution, teaching them that they are only a product of a cosmic accident, they are only a link in the evolutionary chain and they are nothing more than a glorified ape. The logical conclusion of this teaching is that there is no meaningful purpose for their life and no existence after their death.

Believing this theory of evolution also makes it logical to conclude that there is no basis for civil or moral law, that man is only to be governed by physical appetites and the laws of nature such as "survival of the fittest". Thus, if man wants something and is big enough to take it—there is really no reason to not take it.

The theory of evolution also leads to the conclusion that human life is of little value. Since (according to evolution) we are only links in the evolutionary chain, the only difference in human life and the life of a farm animal or even a common house fly is that humans are a little higher up the evolutionary ladder. This explains why abortion and euthanasia have become so common in societies that embrace the theory of evolution. It explains why societies have allowed men like Vladimir Lenin, Adolf Hitler and Chairman Mao to exterminate millions of their own people. It may also explain why a young man can walk into an elementary school and gun down 20 innocent children and then take his own life or why a college student can kill a classmate for the stated reason, "I just wanted to see what it feels like to kill someone."

The Bible clearly teaches that all men will stand before an Almighty God and give account for every deed both good and evil, but rejecting God and the Bible leads to the conclusion that actions have no eternal consequences and results in a society filled with people who have little or no conscience. Such a society gives little thought to the consequences of sexual immorality, dishonesty or infidelity. Such a society will gradually come to accept horrible atrocities such as abortion, euthanasia, infanticide and genocide. Such a society will become so depraved that even when these godless philosophies lead to the murder of their own children they will not recognize the problem but will find themselves wringing their hands and asking, "What can we do?"

I would suggest to you that America has become just such a society. I would also suggest to you that the question our society needs to be considering is, "WHAT HAVE WE DONE?"
